Selous - Mikumi.
The southern circuit of Tanzania is very different from that of the north. It is different in scenery, in wildlife species, in vegetation, and in general is almost a different country. Unless you
have three weeks or more, it is not advisable to include the southern circuit
with the north. They should be seen as two distinct circuits. Tariffs are per
person per night inclusive of entrance fees and game drives. Safaris are based
on two persons sharing. Inquire for groups of 4 or more. The largest and nearest city to the southern parks is Dar es
Salaam. There are numerous daily international flights to and from Dar es Salaam. Although the southern Parks are not as well-known as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater,
they are nevertheless extremely good. They have the great advantage of having
fewer visitors and game viewing can be excellent. Ruaha is considered a
favorite by many naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts. Ruaha National Park. Ruaha (Roo-ah'-ha) is one of Tanzania's largest and most interesting parks. It is still relatively unspoiled by tourism and is not threatened by the human demand
for land as tsetse flies are prevalent in the area and thus inhibit development.
Although the park does not have the very large herds that the Serengeti has,
it is nevertheless a wonderful wilderness area with large numbers of different
animal species. All the large predators are frequently observed as well as big
herds of elephants and buffalo. Sable, roan, greater kudu, and southern reedbuck
are just a few of the antelopes that are seen quite commonly in the Ruaha. The
vegetation is predominantly broad leaf brachystegia woodland. Park fees are $20
per person per 24 hours.
Ruaha's main physical feature is the Ruaha River. This has numerous
hippo pools and crocodiles. The river tends to dry up at the height of the dry
season (September and the first two weeks of October) leaving only small pools
of water here and there.
Accommodation per person: Ruaha N. Park Bandas $100; Tandala Camp $210; Ruaha
River Camp $230; Muguse River Camp $300.
Selous Game Reserve. (Se-loo'). Named after a
famous early twentieth century British hunter, Frederick Courtenay Selous, who
was fatally shot in a skirmish between German and British troops in 1917. His
grave lies in the Selous. The northern part of the reserve is open to safaris
whilst the area south of the Rufiji River is blocked for hunting. The northern
part is well-worth visiting. The Rufiji River is amongst the best of boat rides
to experience in Africa. Entry fee to the reserve is $20 per person per 24
hours.
Accommodation: Rufiji River Camp $140 per person, Impala Camp $140 p.p., Beho
Beho Camp $250 p.p.

The Usambara Mountain range is the home of the
African violet. Like many other areas
in the world that are ecologically important, the Usambaras is threatened by human
encroachment. The Tanzania Government and concerned Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGO's) are promoting amongst local villagers an awareness of the
ecological importance of the Usambaras. An example of this is seen in the
butterfly business that has arisen recently that is run on sound environmental
principles and at the same time is benefiting the local people by providing them
with income from what they earn in rearing butterflies. Visitors are welcome to
visit the butterfly farms. Bird life contains a number of endemics.
